Your Aussie Travel & Packing Guide: Pack Light, Wander More
Share
There’s something about an Aussie getaway that makes you want to keep things simple. A coastal road trip, a long weekend in a little beach town or a few days exploring somewhere new, preferably with time for a good coffee along the way.
But packing? That’s where a relaxed holiday can turn into a suitcase full of “just in case”. This guide will help you pack for the trip you’re actually taking, with practical essentials and a little room left for something you find along the way.
Plan around your destination, not just the season
Australia doesn’t have one holiday forecast. A tropical escape, a southern city break and a country road trip can call for very different bags, even at the same time of year.
Check the forecast for each stop shortly before you leave. Think about what you’ll be doing, whether you’ll have access to laundry and how much luggage you can comfortably carry. If you’re flying, check your airline’s baggage size and weight allowance before you start packing.
Build a small wardrobe that works together
The easiest way to pack less is to choose clothes you can wear in more than one combination. Start with a few colours that work together, then add a favourite piece that makes the outfits feel like you.
For a warm-weather getaway, lightweight tops, comfortable shorts or skirts, and an easy dress or relaxed shirt can take you from a morning wander to a casual dinner. Add a warmer layer for cool evenings or chilly air-conditioning.
Choose footwear around your plans. Comfortable walking shoes are worth the space if you’ll be exploring, while thongs or sandals are handy for beach days. Leave the extra pair behind if you can’t picture when you’ll wear it.
Your long-weekend packing checklist
Use this as a starting point for a casual, warm-weather three-night trip, then adjust for your destination and plans.
- Three or four tops and two bottoms that mix and match
- One easy outfit for dinner or heading into town
- Underwear, sleepwear and socks as needed
- A light jumper or jacket, plus rainwear if the forecast calls for it
- Comfortable walking shoes and sandals or thongs
- Swimmers and a quick-drying towel if you’re heading to the water
- A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Toiletries, personal medication and any prescriptions or supporting documents you need
- A phone, charger, power bank and any required travel adaptor
- A water bottle and a small day bag
- Identification, booking details and your payment essentials
If you’ll have laundry access, a longer trip doesn’t have to mean twice the clothing. Pack enough to get you to wash day rather than a new outfit for every possible occasion.
Keep your travel-day essentials close
Put the things you’ll need on the move in a small, easy-to-reach bag. Your phone, wallet, booking details, medication and charger shouldn’t be buried under your spare clothes.
If you’re checking a suitcase, keep essential medication and a change of clothes in your carry-on where permitted. Check airline and airport requirements for liquids, batteries and any restricted items before travelling.
Heading for the coast?
Keep a separate beach bag ready with swimmers, a towel, sun protection and drinking water. A pouch for wet items helps keep the rest of your luggage dry, while a small zipped pouch makes keys easier to find.
Plan for shade, follow your sunscreen’s label directions and check local UV advice. Before swimming, read local signs and check conditions. At patrolled beaches, swim between the red and yellow flags and follow lifeguard advice.
Taking the scenic route?
For a road trip, make the first day easier by keeping water, snacks, a charger and any overnight essentials within reach. Download maps before setting off if reception may be patchy, and plan fuel stops and rest breaks around your route.
Remote travel needs more preparation than a weekend coastal drive. Check current road conditions, fuel availability, communications options and local safety advice before heading into isolated areas. Don’t assume your usual phone coverage or a nearby shop will be available.
Keep toiletries and little extras under control
Pack the products you use every day rather than your whole bathroom shelf. Use leak-resistant containers, keep liquids together and check what your accommodation provides before bringing bulky extras.
A laundry bag, a few small pouches and a spare tote can help keep things organised without adding much weight. Packing cubes are useful if you already have them, but you don’t need a brand-new set of travel accessories to pack well.
Do one final edit before you zip up
Lay everything out and ask: will I use this, can I wear it with more than one thing, and is it worth carrying? Remove duplicate items and anything that only works for an unlikely plan.
Leave a little space for the trip home, too. Whether it’s a local market find or simply clothes that never fold quite as neatly the second time, a bit of breathing room goes a long way.
Less luggage, more holiday
At The Shacktique, we love the easygoing side of getting away: comfortable outfits, useful essentials and time to enjoy wherever you’ve landed.
You don’t need a perfect suitcase. Just pack for your destination, keep the important things close and leave the unnecessary extras at home. Then you can get on with the good bit: finding your next favourite corner of Australia.
